As a teenager, Thomas Oddy decided he wanted to be an electrician.
Having successfully completed an NVQ Level 1 Electrical course, he looked to find an employer in West Yorkshire who would help him continue his training. His enthusiasm, self-motivation and willingness to learn impressed Halifax-based Paul Ashton Electrical Limited, who offered him an electrical apprenticeship.

The Apprenticeship
Thomas began a four-year apprenticeship in late-2016, via a City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment).
He is already ahead of schedule in completing his technical units, which means he will be able to take his crucial AM2 assessment six months early.
“The apprenticeship has meant I have been able to combine college training with paid employment,” said Thomas.
“I have benefited from learning on the job with an experienced employer and supervisor, while at the same time working with the college’s electrical tutors and training officer. The college has helped me with my English qualification, as well as my NVQ.”

Achievements
Thomas’s training officer at Calderdale College, Craig Olley, said: “Thomas’s performance on the electrical apprenticeship has been excellent, and he is a key part of the company he works for.
“He has made very good progress on his technical units, completing them several months earlier than others in his class. He has made such good progress with his NVQ that he was put in for the AM2 end assessment in March 2019, when those assessments normally take place in September or October.”
Thomas – who has a long-term aim of becoming a self-employed electrician – recently represented Calderdale College in an electrical skills competition for apprentices.
Craig Olley added: “I think Thomas has the kind of attitude that will stand him in very good stead in the electrical industry. He is already a substantial asset in his company and great example of a Calderdale College student progressing in the commercial world.”
