Calderdale College to offer new sports programme for primary schools
Calderdale College is working in partnership with local
sports coaching provider, 5Sport, to offer bespoke activity programmes for all
primary schools across Calderdale.
The partnership is part of a wider mission to develop
physical activity and competition in young people across the region. Sport
England reports, as of the 2021-22 academic year, activity levels remain the
lowest in school years 3 and 4, and Calderdale College is dedicated to raising
awareness of the importance of sport on young people’s wellbeing.
Working with 5Sport’s team of qualified teachers and PE,
education and performance specialists, the College will tailor each programme
to the school’s needs, factoring in both physical and mental health aspects, to
maximise their pupils’ personal developments.

The programme boasts a range of activities for schools to take advantage of, including physical education and extra-curricular sport sessions, accredited and non-accredited sports leadership sessions, and the organisation and hosting of competition events.
The College has already cemented successful partnerships with local clubs, including the Halifax Panthers, FC Halifax Town, Huddersfield Town Women, Bradford Dragons and Calderdale Cubs, which will be utilised to offer master classes at the schools to increase knowledge into performance sport.
Colin Crowther, Schools and Programme Manager at Calderdale College, said: “This new programme offer is a great opportunity for Calderdale primary schools to maximise the benefits of physical activity for their students. By working with 5Sport, we aim to build a sustainable system that not only enriches young people, but makes a real difference to their wellbeing.”
Calderdale Village Schools Federation, which includes Norland CE School and Mary’s CE Primary School, has worked with 5Sport for the last two years to deliver its physical education curriculum and extra-curricular sports coaching at both the schools.
The new partnership sees the collaboration of two locally-established organisations, Calderdale College and 5Sport, to ensure the best possible development for sport in schools.
Yvette Sullivan, Executive Headteacher of the Federation, commented on the previous work with 5Sport: “5Sport has been instrumental in supporting competitive inter-school sports events across the Federation and improving our pupils’ attitudes towards sport and their own abilities.
“The combination of this, with our pupils learning and practicing new skills, really reflect the skills of the coaches as they support, nurture and motivate during their sessions. This, with the expertise of the team at Calderdale College will really make a difference in our local area.”
