Natalie never considered going to university after school due to her grades, the worry of being in debt and wanting to stay close to home.
She explains: “I didn’t have a good attitude in school but after I had my daughter, I knew I wanted to get a better paying job. I’ve worked since I was 16 but I wanted a career and to set a good example for her.
“I knew I needed to get qualified, so I started an Access to Higher Education (HE) course at Calderdale College while I was on maternity leave from my full-time job. I knew I didn’t want to travel to Leeds or Bradford because I had to think about childcare. I’m local to Halifax so it seemed like the perfect fit.”
Once Natalie had finished her Access to HE course, a qualification which prepares students for study at degree level, she started to research universities in the area.
She added: “I was looking at big universities like Leeds and Huddersfield, but I didn’t want to go somewhere with huge lecture theatres and big class sizes. That’s when I found out I could stay at Calderdale College and do my degree here.\n\n[/cs_content_seo][/cs_column][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ _bp_base=”0_2″ type=”1/2″ style=”padding: 0px 0px 20px;”][cs_element_image _id=”11″ ][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section parallax=”false” separator_top_type=”none” separator_top_height=”50px” separator_top_inset=”0px” separator_top_angle_point=”50″ separator_bottom_type=”none” separator_bottom_height=”50px” separator_bottom_inset=”0px” separator_bottom_angle_point=”50″ _bp_base=”0_2″ style=”margin: 0px;padding: 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” _bp_base=”0_2″ style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ _bp_base=”0_2″ type=”1/1″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_element_text _id=”15″ ][cs_content_seo]“Ultimately I chose to stay because the course tuition is cheaper and you’ve got a better tutor to student ratio. I like the small classes and you get so much more support.”

When applying for her degree, Natalie was unsure where she wanted her career to go. She knew she wanted to work in a management position so she could help people develop and upskill, like she did through her Access course.
“Studying Business, you learn loads of transferable skills including conflict management, how to motivate other people and operations management. You can apply this into day-to-day work across various sectors.
“Studying is helping me decide who I want to be in the future. I don’t have a set goal or a particular field that I’m aiming for, but I know I want to get into management to help people in the workplace.
“For me that’s the focus and the business modules give me an overview of lots of important skills I will need.”
