Paul Floyd Blake, a former National Diploma in Photography student, has been awarded the first prize for the prestigious Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2009. The prize presents the best in contemporary portrait photography, with work of established professionals and amateurs sitting alongside each other. Paul was one of 2 400 photographers who submitted their images before being selected as one of four prize-winners.

The accolade is for Rosie Bancroft, 2009, which is part of an ongoing project entitled On Track for 2012. Paul aimed to capture 'ordinary youngsters striving to do extraordinary things'. He admits that the project is more about the transition from childhood into adulthood with these youngsters living in a highly specialised and skilled world that is far removed from that of their peers.

Catherine Powter, Paul’s former tutor expresses her delight at his new status:

"It is excellent news that Paul's photographic portrait has won first prize in the 2009 National Portrait Gallery Taylor Wessing Award. Paul always was, and still very much is, ambitious, determined, has an endless thirst for knowledge, and has an incredible lucidity with the camera. The award is well deserved"

For those of you would like to visit the exhibition please contact the National Portrait Gallery or visit Paul’s website.
